Record Examination Results 2/09/10

St Olave's School
St Olave's is thrilled to announce record results following this year's GCSE and A Level examinations. A2 level students achieved 96% A*/B grades, (with 28 students securing Oxbridge places) whilst GCSE students achieved 84% A*/A grades. These fine achievements lead The Telegraph to place the School  3rd (A Level) and 17th (GCSE) in their Secondary School National performance tables.

Year 5 Mathematics and Science Day 23/6/10.

Yr 5 pupils tackle a giant suduko puzzle
The Year 5 Mathematics and Science Day is an eagerly awaited event on the Specialist Status calendar. This Year pupils were to be involved in two science activities and two mathematics activities.
As 210 pupils decended on St. Olave’s for the day the Mathematics and Science Prefects, who had organised the activities, slowly realised the scale of the event. Pupils from The Highway, St. Paul’s Cray, Warren Road and Chelsfield schools sat on the bottom field on a beautiful June morning awaiting instructions as they gathered for their first activity. Groups had been imaginative with their names, but the prize for the best team name had to go to ‘100% H2O’ for their clever cross curricula reference.

Pupils were split into classes for the day and embarked on activities such as ‘Who Dunnit?’ a science investigation involving chromatography, a speed distance activity where pupils timed each other running between set distance and then used the speed = distance/time formula to calculate their average speech. Maths activities proved challenging as pupils tried to solve a 4 x 4 magic square along with suduko puzzles and pupils were intrigued as the Sixth Form Prefect baffled them with mathematical tricks with which they could challenge their friends.

Points were awarded throughout the day for mathematics and science ability as well as team work. Success was celebrated by all schools at the end of the day as The Highway team ‘Multiple Mathematicians’ won the science trophy, ‘Funky Fractions’ from Chelsfield walked away with the Science Team Work shield, Warren Road could not be beaten in mathematics and their team ‘Perfect Pink Protractors’ took home the Mathematics trophy and St. Paul’s Cray ‘The Intergalatic Increasers’ were awarded the Mathematics Team Shield.

An enjoyable, but tiring, day was had by all. The St. Olave’s Prefects did a great job of organising and running the activities and all the Year 5 pupils threw themselves into the day with great enthusiasm making it a great day for all.

Years' 8 & 9 Mathematical Days' Challenges 16/7/10

Mathematical days

Y8 students competed in various mathematical challenges in the first Activity Week. Harvard beat Cure by the finest of margins overall,

but, interestingly, the best performing team came from the worst performing House. Team 20, which consisted of Janushanth Sritharan, Connor Stimson, Oskay Tarhan, Hoan Truong, Isaac Van Bakel and Henry Zhu took the honours for Leeke.

Meanwhile Y9 enjoyed a day of mathematical activities in the penultimate week of term, including, amongst other things, a hands-on risk and probability road show from the Millennium Maths Project based at Cambridge University.

Lower School Actors Present – "The Canterbury Tales" – 7,8,9 July 2010

Lower School present - Millar's Tale
A talented cast of actors from the lower School recreated classic tales of love, loss, jealousy, magic and farmyard animals in their energetic modern retelling of Chaucer's most popular tales.
Four Medieval alchemists attempt to revive Geoffrey Chaucer from a strange and mystical comatose state by bringing five of his best known tales vibrantly to life.
