Key Stage 3 English

Year 7

In accordance with the Secondary English National Curriculum, you will be taught how to write in a range of forms and for different audiences and purposes.  You will learn how to read for meaning and to understand how language is used in imaginative, original and diverse ways.  You will be encouraged to read widely for pleasure and information. You will also learn how to adapt your talk for a range of purposes and audiences, including more formal contexts.  The areas studied include:
  • 20th century novel 
  • Poetry – studying heritage poetry and a group research project on a modern poet
  • Shakespeare – Much Ado About Nothing
  • Non fiction – Analysing speeches and writing balloon debate speech for inter-house
  • 20th century drama – Unman, Wittering and Zigo
  • Media project – Dragon’s Den pitch
English Assessments in Year 7
  • Creative writing task
  • Presentation about one poem per student 
  • Analysis of one scene exploring different interpretations
  • Speaking and Listening inter-house speech
  • Analytical essay integrating context
  • Media - writing to persuade
Year 8
This year will build on the previous one and gradually introduce more challenging texts and higher expectations. In accordance with the Secondary English National Curriculum, you will be taught how to write in a range of forms and for different audiences and purposes. You will learn how to read for meaning and to understand how language is used in imaginative, original and diverse ways. You will be encouraged to read widely for pleasure and information.  You will also learn how to adapt your talk for a range of purposes and audiences, including more formal contexts.  The areas studied include:
  • 20th Century novel 
  • Shakespeare Play and a research project for homework
  • Writing skills for different purposes
  • Myths and Legends from around the world
  • Poetry – Time and Place from Anthology
  • 20th century play with focus on context
