One the evening of Tuesday 7 May, the annual Jazz Night celebrated the capabilities of student performers from Years 7 to 13. Among the high-quality entertainment throughout the evening were included a dexterous alto sax solo from Alfie Beston and a delicate performance on the vibraphone from Sachin Balaji, both winners of recent competitions at Bromley Youth Music Trust. The school's big band made an appearance as well of course, with Year 13 leavers James, Matt, Sam and Nebiy delivering their final solos with the band in classic standards "Sing Sing Sing" and "Spain". We also enjoyed performances from various student led ensembles, including "Celtic Suite", an Irish-influenced work composed for sax quartet by Gavin Whitlock.
As ever, the concert welcomed a special guest, on this occasion legendary trumpet player, Mike Lovatt, currently Principal in the John Wilson Orchestra and with a vast array of recording credits. He dazzled with incredible tone in the gentle "Embraceable you" by Gershwin and joined the big band for the concert's denouement - "Gonna Fly Now", better known as the theme from "Rocky", whose trumpet part is nothing short of astronomic!
Many Thanks to Mr Beston, Omnipresent mastermind of all things jazzy, as well as Mike Lovatt and pianist Jim Treweek.
