Classics Association Prize
Our congratulations go to Elise Stringfellow , in Year 12, who has been awarded First Prize in the Classics Essay Competition from the Cambridge Classical Association for her explanation about why Oedipus is the most memorable literary character she has encountered in Classical Civilisation.
The Judges' comments were:
" At both GCSE and A level, we were very pleased to see students engaging in
such a lively way with the literary texts they had read for their Classical
Civilisation studies. We had a good spread of characters discussed: Helen,
Achilles, Aeneas, Circe, Heracles, Trimalchio, Oedipus, Athena (x 3!) and
Odysseus. There was an impressive amount of knowledge and enthusiasm for
Classical reading on display. It was very good to see considerable
creativity in the way students engaged with their characters and topics:
some engaged with visual as well as literary representations of their
character, or thought also about the implications of their character's
story for modern interpretations of their myths or of similar issues. At A
level in particular, the best answers were able to engage with secondary
reading, showing their interest in what Classics scholars have written
about the characters under discussion. We were delighted with the response
to this first year of the essay competition." Dr Rosanna Omitowoju Senior Lecturer Faculty of Classics, University of Cambridge
