Debating Society

A team representing St. Olave’s Debating Society scored a success in the recent first round of the English Speaking Union’s Schools Debating competition, known as the Schools’ Mace.
In a first round heat held at Eltham College, the team of three were up against the hosts in a debate on the topic of a 4-day school week; other local schools took part in other debates, and two teams were selected to go through to the next round.
The St. Olave’s trio, anchored by society President Trijagati (Year 13), won plaudits from the judges and were put through, along with our opponents, Eltham. As both teams go through, we will never know if we “won” that debate, but we would like to think so!
The next round will be in the New Year, where the Debating Society will also be entering both the Oxford and Cambridge Schools contests.
The success was especially enjoyable as it was the first formal competition for the other two participants - Maisie (Year 13) and Aayush (Year 12). A huge well done to the fantastic team.
