Art and Design

Overview

Mrs J. Anderson  - Head of Art and Design

Art and design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual,  tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the world.

ArtPupils use colour, form, texture, pattern and different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think. Through art and design activities, they learn to make informed value judgments and aesthetic and practical decisions, becoming actively involved in shaping environments.

They explore ideas and meanings in the work of artists, craftspeople and designers. They learn about the diverse roles and functions of art, craft and design in contemporary life, and in different times and cultures. Understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts have the power to enrich our personal and public lives.

All pupils study Art at KS3. At KS4 they are able to choose between Art, Graphics or Photography. This leads on to a similar choice at AS and A2 level. The Department is experienced at developing students to go on to courses in higher education in Architecture, Art College and all aspects of Art and Design education.

This Week's artists of the week:

James 8H

Our talented Year 8 students have been bringing their classmates to life on paper, creating stunning portrait drawings!  As they refine their skills, they are mastering the use of tonal values to build depth and form, capturing the essence of each face with remarkable detail.

Rithvik 7H

Rithvik has been experimenting with drawing in his spare time and this work is a very eye-catching example of how line can create intricate patterns even when working in
monochrome. The illustrative qualities of this artwork are excellent.
