Classics talk by Professor Catharine Edwards, Birkbeck College

3 Mar 2025

Students of Latin and Classical Civilisation were recently treated to a talk on the life of the emperor Nero and the challenging concept of performing gender in ancient Rome by Professor Catharine Edwards (Birkbeck College, University of London).

With many links to our set texts about Nero's life, Professor Edwards introduced Olavians to how Nero broke boundaries regarding the role of the emperor and a vir in Rome through acting and celebrating his dramatic successes instead of being a conquering warlord.

Olavians asked a variety of questions about whether Nero had suffered trauma, the accuracy of ancient historiography and male historians' presentation of his mother Agrippina.

Many thanks indeed to Professor Edwards for her enlightening presentation last week.
