Classics Lecture
Dr. Rhiannon Easterbrook addressed KS4 and KS5 Latin and Classical Civilisation students in the annual Classics Lecture on Wednesday.
In a wide ranging talk, she explained her current area of research about invasions both metaphorical and actual of the ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian world into Victorian and Edwardian society. This included actual invasion literature such as The War of the Worlds as well as more controversial areas regarding fears about women's suffrage or Egyptian occult.
Her splendid talk showed how studying Humanities requires knowledge of languages, history, culture, art, music as well technology for looking at macro-patterns within the texts. Questions from students were varied and included why Classics was so important to 1900s society and the mythology of Venus and Vulcan.
