Year 10 Latin trip to Hadrian's Wall -AW2, 2026
The Classics Department has taken Y10 students of Latin to Northumberland this Activitives Week 2, to visit the Roman archaeological sites and hike parts of Hadrian’s Wall.
The Wall remains one of the most famous monuments of the Roman occupation of Britannia and is testament to the civilisation’s ambition, engineering prowess and continuing importance today when barriers to mark national borders are still a fact of life for many.
Throughout the trip Year 10 have been learning about the multi-cultural nature of the Roman Army in Britain, seen Roman military, religious and civilian archaeology in situ, visited some of the most up-to-date museums in the country and have witnessed breath-taking landscapes as they hiked along parts of the wall.
This trip has provided a myriad of opportunities for practising Latin through engaging with original inscriptions and whilst considering historical reliability of the archaeological evidence they have encountered, and the geographical nature of the landscape whilst improving map-reading skills and engaging with the cultural offerings of Durham’s medieval history.
This has been a wonderful opportunity for students to not only walk the main section of Hadrian’s Wall, but to also visit the Roman Army Museum, Chesters Fort, The Angel of the North, the town of Durham including its magnificent the Cathedral and enjoy a hands-on archaeology session at the university.
Tomorrow they will visit Tynemouth and the Roman Vinolanda.
